ive never exactly downloaded any other AV on my PC. I mean if im stupid enough to download smth from an untrustworthy source, id most prob also ignore the AV warnings as false positives. plus even apps that im sure arent viruses get auto deleted by WD when i pirate them, so i feel like thinking before downloading is always the best option

windows defender is good for general virus protection on windows 10 and windows 11. for specific files, you can always upload to virustotal to check, which checks the safety using something like 40 different antivirus engines. this is the lightest combination that's also very comprehensive.

Is virustotal free? or signup or does it track files?

Yes virustotal is free to use. Yes it does keep the uploaded files for security analysis, so don't upload private files.

I have windows security enabled but it hasn't caught on anything in years. Not that it's useless, you just got know and be careful with what you put on your computer.

Windows defender is sufficient for most people, but for a full protection, it would not be enough

This post is old, but for those wondering, I agree with the people saying that Defender is enough nowadays for basic use. However, I prefer having an additional antivirus on my computer when I'm downloading software, movies, etc., from sources I don't trust yet.

That doesn't really do much for your security posture though.
Arguably, it'd make a lot of people less safe since they'll be learning a new OS & how to be safe on that OS.
