Your Twitter Feed Is About to Get a Lot More Newsy

The goal is to help users quickly discover breaking news and events they care about. The changes will be arriving over the coming weeks and months on both iOS and Android.

Not sure how to get the most out of Twitter? The platform is trying to fix that by surfacing the most eye-catching stuff for you.

Currently, finding information on Twitter involves searching, perusing trending topics, or swiping through Moments. Going forward, Twitter wants to bring news front and center with personalized feeds.

The Explore tab on mobile now splits things up by content type (video, articles, etc). But the company is "experimenting with topic tabs in Explore so it's easier to see what's happening in news and entertainment, and what's most relevant to you," the company said in a blog post. Look for that "in the coming months" on iOS and Android.

Smartphone notifications will also get more personalized over the next weeks. Twitter promised alerts "based on your interests (like who you follow and what you Tweet about)" rather than just breaking news, though you can disable this in settings.

Twitter will also place "news that's relevant to you" at the top of your timeline.

As for Moments, which got hidden inside the Explore tab last year, Twitter plans a small redesign that will have people scroll vertically instead of swiping horizontally. "Some Moments—including Moments outside of the US, Sponsored Moments and Moments created by you—will temporarily continue to be horizontal as we roll out this change," Twitter said.

This will be especially useful for people who don't have "well-curated" Twitter feeds and aren't sure who to follow, said the company's vice president of product Sriram Krishnan. As an example, he pointed to the NBA Finals. "With these changes, you should get a personalized notification when the game is on and the game at the top of your timeline," he said in a tweet.

The focus on news and events comes as Facebook has decided to reduce media articles, and other noise, over the platform. "This is just the beginning," Krishnan added. "You'll see these changes roll out starting today and some in the coming weeks/months. We will be learning and iterating based on feedback."

Looking up the World Cup, for instance, will surface the latest news topics about the soccer event. Tapping on an item will offer a recap of the latest discussion on Twitter about the topic. In the coming months, Twitter's Explore tab (the magnifying glass icon) will also introduce sections organized by topics.
