I think the US is too strict with consumer products sometimes. It's like everything is leased under pseudo-ownership. You should reverse engineer what you want. If manufacturers don't disable UART or JTAG then how can they expect an enthusiasts or hackers not to upload arbitrary data and test the boundaries?
